🚌 Senior Transportation — The Issue Raised
A senior community member brought forward a concrete and urgent problem during the meeting's open discussion period.
The Problem
Many older residents cannot drive and struggle to reach the senior center or medical appointments (e.g., hospital visits)
The senior center van is only available periodically — roughly mornings, 9:00 AM to noon
Some seniors need physical assistance boarding/alighting vehicles and getting into their homes
Many can afford only a limited contribution ($10–$20/hour) toward transport costs
The Proposal
The resident proposed scheduled shuttle runs — for example, two set days per week (e.g., Monday & Wednesday, or Tuesday & Thursday) — with an aide on board to assist with boarding, alighting, and carrying packages inside the home.
Direct quote from the meeting:
"Our problem is older seniors. They are not able to drive. They are not able to get to the center unless a younger senior like myself, takes them up and brings them. Right? We have a senior van that is only there periodically from 9:00 to maybe 12. The problem is a lot of our seniors have to go up to Phelps Hospital. They can't afford $10, $15, $20 an hour…"
💬 Responses & Suggestions from the Room
Several attendees offered ideas and pointed to existing resources that could help address the gap.
Medicare / Medicaid Transport Programs
One speaker noted that medically necessary recurring trips — such as dialysis transport — may already be eligible for coverage through Medicare or Medicaid assistance programs. Seniors with qualifying medical needs were encouraged to explore this route.
"It Takes a Village" Volunteer Network
A community volunteer organization was cited as a model worth tapping. Volunteers in this network assist seniors with grocery deliveries, rides, and in-home support — potentially a near-term solution while a formal program is explored.
Prior Attempts & Rideshare
Attendees acknowledged that senior shuttle and rideshare options had been tried by others before, but no definitive or comprehensive solution was immediately available. The issue remains open.
Task Force / Committee Follow-Up
The moderator and others directed the senior to follow up with relevant village staff — the transportation committee, aging services coordinator, or volunteer group organizers — and suggested the council could explore forming a dedicated task force.
